Controlled microparticle production for long-acting injectables

Achieving the right microparticle size, porosity, composition, and uniformity is crucial for consistent drug release and reliable performance in long-acting injectables. The challenge is that most conventional methods force a trade-off between precise control and large-scale production. You typically can’t have both.

In this case study, we show how IN-AIR MICROFLUIDICS™ enables the high-throughput production of uniform, tunable, and bioresorbable microparticles, outperforming traditional batch emulsification processes.

Some highlights from the study:

  • We produced microparticles under 100 microns, with a very tight size distribution and impressive uniformity.
  • Our platform allows control over particle size, shape, and porosity by tweaking jetting and solidification.
  • It’s compatible with most used bioresorbable polymers like PLGA, PLA, and PCL without the need for additional materials.
  • You achieve scalable production rates without sacrificing the precision of microfluidics. Large batches, tight tolerances.
  • Drug release profiles are much more consistent, enabling more dependable controlled-release formulations.

Corbion partnered on this project, and together we demonstrated that IN-AIR MICROFLUIDICS™ enables reproducible, scalable manufacturing of advanced drug delivery particles. Interested in more?
