Solubilization and Long-acting Release of Curcumin

Hydrophobic active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) like curcumin offer strong therapeutic potential, but their clinical translation is often limited by poor solubility, low bioavailability, and rapid degradation.

In this case study, we demonstrate how IN-AIR MICROFLUIDICS™ changes the game. By encapsulating curcumin within PLGA microparticles, we enhance its solubility and provide a controlled, long-lasting release.

Some key highlights you find in this case study:

  • We produced uniform PLGA microparticles, all under 100 microns, with high curcumin loading efficiency.
  • Curcumin showed much better dispersion in water: no clumping or settling.
  • Release continued for at least four weeks under physiological conditions, achieving true sustained delivery.
  • Curcumin retained over 80% of its antioxidant activity even after prolonged incubation.
  • The process scales efficiently and delivers consistent results, making it well-suited for long-acting injectable formulations.

In collaboration with Corbion, we’ve shown that IN-AIR MICROFLUIDICS™ offers researchers new options for formulating challenging hydrophobic APIs like curcumin. Explore the case study for the data and discover how microencapsulation enables long-acting, bioresorbable drug delivery solutions.
