Manufacturing over 1 Billion Mesenchymal Stem Cells with Dissolvable Microcarriers

Scaling adherent cell culture in bioreactors remains a major bottleneck in cell therapy manufacturing. Conventional microcarriers often limit growth efficiency and lead to significant cell loss during harvesting.

In this application note, we demonstrate scalable expansion of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) using Dissolvable Microcarriers in the Osilaris™ bioreactor from Scinus Cell Expansion, showing a robust and reproducible path from process to scale.

Key results include:

  • ≥1×10⁹ MSCs within 14 days in a scalable bioreactor process
  • ≥90% cell recovery through complete microcarrier dissolution
  • ~5.5× higher yield compared to conventional microcarriers
  • Rapid cell attachment and exponential growth with efficient bead-to-bead transfer
  • Preservation of MSC phenotype and differentiation potential after expansion and harvest

As shown in the Results (pages 6–7), Dissolvable Microcarriers fully dissolve within minutes, enabling gentle harvesting into a single-cell suspension while maintaining high viability and functionality.

Developed in partnership with Scinus Cell Expansion, this study demonstrates a scalable, bioreactor-compatible solution for producing clinically relevant cell quantities.
